Custom Operational Apps

Dashboards tell you what happened. Custom apps help your team decide what to do next. This is where most consultants stop — and we're just getting started.

Outcomes

What you'll have when we're done.

  • A custom web application your team uses every day to do real work
  • Tools that fit your actual workflow — not whatever an off-the-shelf SaaS forces on you
  • Decisions made faster, with better information, by the right people
  • Fewer spreadsheets. Fewer meetings to figure out the truth. Fewer surprises.
  • An application that lives on top of your data platform — every action grounded in real data

How we work

The process.

Discover

Job-to-be-done

We sit with the people who'll use the tool. Foreman scheduling capacity. Estimator pricing a job. PM checking margin mid-project. We learn the actual job they're trying to do.

Design

Click-through prototype

Before we write production code, we build a clickable prototype. Your team uses it, breaks it, redirects us. We iterate until it's obviously right.

Build

Production engineering

React or Next.js front-end. Express or Node API. Hooked into your data platform with auth and role-based access. Tested. Deployed. Real software, not a demo.

Adopt

Roll out & refine

Training, documentation, and a feedback loop in the first month. We watch how people actually use it and tune what's not landing.

Deliverables

Exactly what you get.

  • Production web application (React / Next.js)
  • REST or GraphQL API (Node / Express) connected to your data warehouse
  • Role-based access control and authentication
  • Hosting setup (Vercel, Cloudflare, Azure — your choice)
  • Source code and documentation
  • Training and rollout support

Fit check

This is right for you if…

You have a workflow that no off-the-shelf tool fits — manpower estimating, custom scheduling, multi-system approvals, anything proprietary to how you operate. You already have (or are building) a data platform that this app can pull from. You'd rather pay once for software you own than pay forever for SaaS that doesn't quite fit.

It's probably not the right fit if…

A standard SaaS would do the job (we'll tell you if it would). You want a fully native iOS/Android app — we focus on web apps that work great on phones, but native mobile is outside our scope. You don't have an underlying data foundation yet — start with the platform, then build apps on top.

Common questions

FAQs.

Why custom over SaaS?

SaaS makes sense when your process matches the software. For SMB manufacturers, the process usually doesn't — and the workarounds cost more than the license. Custom is the right answer when (a) your workflow is a competitive advantage, or (b) you've outgrown the SaaS that used to fit.

Do we have to use React?

It's our default — fast, popular, easy to hire for, works everywhere. If you have an existing stack we can integrate with (.NET, Vue, plain Django), we'll discuss. But greenfield, we recommend React or Next.js.

What about maintenance?

Two options: hand off to your internal team with documentation (we'll train them), or keep us on a Fractional Data Lead retainer that covers app maintenance and feature work.

Can this work with our ERP / accounting system?

Yes — that's the whole point. The app reads from (and sometimes writes back to) the unified data platform we've already built. Your ERP becomes a system of record, the app becomes the system of action.

How much does it cost?

Project-based. Smaller tools (single-purpose, internal-only) start around the price of one mid-level engineer for 6–8 weeks. Larger applications scope up from there. We give a fixed bid after a paid discovery phase.
